Approaches to Overcoming Negative Body Image in Treatment

When it comes to the development of eating disorders, body image plays a huge role. Essentially, body image is the way one perceives the way their own body looks. It can take into account self-feelings about weight, size, and basically any other physical attribute. Typically, folks who are living with eating disorders experience negative body image. Thus, leading to the development of negative behaviors including restrictive eating habits, overeating, and neglecting to eat altogether. In this article, we will discuss ways you can overcome negative body image.

Since body image plays such an important factor in the development of many eating disorders, it’s important to address negative body image during treatment. This way, while folks in treatment can learn more about how to eat healthy and utilize helpful coping mechanisms, they can also work on healing what truly motivates unhealthy eating patterns.

There are a number of therapeutic tools and techniques that are helpful in boosting body image. Therefore, it helps folks living with eating disorders to see themselves for who they truly are – a person who is beautiful and deserving of love regardless of her size, weight, and outer appearance.

Approaches to Healing Negative Body Image Issues

Here at Lotus Healing, we offer a number of techniques and approaches to help boost body positivity and heal negative body image issues. Some of these techniques include:

Coaching: Coaching for eating disorder behaviors and negative body image issues offers a compassionate and supportive approach to healing and personal growth. By working with a skilled coach, individuals can explore the underlying factors contributing to their disordered eating patterns and negative body image beliefs. Through a combination of guidance, education, and empowerment, coaching helps individuals develop healthier habits, cultivate self-acceptance, and build a positive relationship with food and their bodies. Coaches provide a safe space for clients to address emotional triggers, challenge distorted beliefs, and develop effective coping strategies. With the support of a coach, individuals can embark on a transformative journey towards recovery, self-love, and enhanced well-being.

Mind Body Skills Groups: Mind-body skills groups for eating disorders and negative body image offer a powerful and holistic approach to healing and self-discovery. In these groups, individuals with similar struggles come together to explore the mind-body connection and learn valuable tools for recovery. Through a combination of techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, breathwork, and expressive arts therapy, participants can cultivate self-awareness, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and deepen their understanding of their bodies and emotions. These groups provide a supportive environment where individuals can share their experiences, gain insight, and receive encouragement from others who have faced similar challenges. Together, they embark on a transformative journey towards healing, self-acceptance, and reclaiming a positive relationship with their bodies.

Eat, Breathe, Thrive: Eat Breathe Thrive (EBT) is a seven week program focused on four core skills or “pillars” (functional action, embodied intimacy, inner awareness, and self-regulation).  EBT includes many modalities — yoga, meditation, psychoeducation, and peer support.  You work on the skills with a facilitator and peer support group in a course through a series of sessions. The sessions are two hours in length; one hour of discussion and activities, followed by a yoga and meditation practice. The yoga practice is designed to help you embody and integrate your insights. You also receive at-home exercises to help you apply what you learn in your life. EBT is an evidence-based intervention. It was developed by people who have recovered from eating disorders to help others improve their relationship with food, body, and self. It includes practices to help you tune into hunger and fullness signals, cope with difficult emotions, build healthy relationships, and foster a healthy relationship with your body.  It is offered in schools, treatment centers, schools and universities, and anywhere people gather to connect, learn, and grow.
