Three Easy and Simple Ways to Improve Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is something that we develop during childhood and adolescence that shapes the way to see ourselves. Essentially, it is a psychological construct that embodies how we measure our self-worth and value as a human being. So, when it comes to mental health, self-esteem is an important part of healing and determining where a person wants to be as far as setting goals for recovery. When an individual struggles with self-esteem, it can be challenging to care about taking care of oneself physically, mentally, and emotionally. And, negative self-esteem can lead to lasting, negative feelings, thought patterns, and behaviors that can harm the body and mind.

Fortunately, there are a few ways that people can work to boost self-esteem.

Remember What You’re Grateful For

It’s easy to get down on yourself when you aren’t thinking about what you are proud of yourself for, what you have, and the people who love you. Practicing gratitude is a great way to overcome the pressures of negative self-esteem as it allows you to focus on the positive things in your life. Rather than being consumed in what you don’t like about yourself, practicing gratitude forces you to identify what you love about yourself, your life, and how far you’ve come. When we spend too much time focusing on what we don’t have or what we want, we are sure to become overwhelmed with self-doubt and self-pity. However, when we allow ourselves to pinpoint what we already have, we can see more clearly that we are more blessed than we may realize all the time.

So, when you’re feeling down about yourself or don’t feel that you have what it takes to reach your goals, remember to practice gratitude. This way, you can understand that if you have the body, the people, and the gifts it took to get you this far in life, you have what it takes to reach your full potential.

Encourage Yourself With Your Words

Positive affirmations are things you can say to yourself to improve self-esteem. Our minds are easily influenced by what people say – even yourself! So, even if you believe that you aren’t enough when you tell yourself you are, eventually you will start to believe it. Positive affirmations are an easy way to boost self-confidence every day. Simply tell yourself little words of encouragement to practice this improved self-esteem method. For example, say to yourself things like “You are enough”, “you’re beautiful”, “you can do it”, and “I am strong”. After a while, you will begin to experience the benefits of affirmations, including a boosted sense of self-confidence!

Do the Things That You Love the Most

When we engage in activities that we enjoy and are good at, we are more likely to enjoy ourselves. If you’re having a good time and enjoying what you’re doing, you feel confident. Thus, improving your self-confidence. When we get older, we tend to do what we love less and less as it’s hard to find time to do the things we truly enjoy. However, if we make an effort to make time for these things, we can start to experience the difference in our lives. So, do what you can to work it into your schedule to do what you love. For example, some activities can include hiking, cooking, making art, journaling, crafting, and more. Whatever it is you love to do, don’t keep yourself from doing it and making yourself feel better about yourself and your life!
